Effective Dates: 2006/07-2007/04
Amount: $2,500
Description: This grant pertains to
a part of larger project, namely, the development of a multivariable
calculus textbook for engineers and scientists. This text will
emphasize as many as possible of the important conceptual ideas in most
higher level books while still leaving out the abstractions and rigor
usually excluded from books aimed at the same audience.
As this larger project proceeds, the first written chapter will be used
as a supplemental text for a new course in the Mathematics Department
called Math 102, a course in multivariable calculus designed around the
Economics major. Part of this project includes the creation of
homework exercises and solutions. The technical requirements of this
work is such that much of it can be done by undergraduates.
This grant provides funding that has employed talented undergraduate
majors from the Mathematics Department to work on the creation of these
exercises and solutions.
