Abstract: This paper describes the formulation of vaporliquid phase equilibrium as a linearly constrained minimization problem. It also describes a second minimization problem designed to test for local phase stability. Vectorized unconstrained minimization techniques can be used to solve this pair of constrained minimization problems. The methods of this paper are applied to liquidvapor equilibria for mixtures both far from and near to the phase boundary. Significant improvements over the standard successive substitution algorithm are demonstrated.
