The focus of Professor Stern's research is the study of analytic problems arising in geometry, topology, and physics.
In recent work, Professor Stern has studied analytical, geometric, and topological questions arising from string theory and M theory. These have led to a study of (i) non fredholm index theories, (ii) constraints on supersymmetric Lagrangians arising in Yang Mills theory and M theory, (iii) the structure of groundstate wave functions for supersymmetric quantum mechanical systems, (iv) gravitational anomalies arising in M theory, (v) L2 delbar-cohomology of various moduli spaces. (vi) questions in Yang-Mills theory.
