    Abstract:
Here, four possible objectives are proposed to expand the array of scientific questions in Alzheimer disease research that focuses on cognitive functioning and strengthen the scientific information base. These objectives are to (1) perform within-group assessments of cognitive status in African American populations and further study the barriers to mental health care; (2) further explore the role of education, quantitatively and qualitatively, in the prevalence and incidence of cognitive impairment associated with Alzheimer disease; (3) examine practical aspects of cognitive functioning and include performance on these types of measures in the assessment of cognitive status; and (4) create some sort of standardization of scores for measures such as the MMSE for African Americans so as to create appropriate cutoffs for different degrees of impairment.
