   Abstract:
   Age is a personal characteristic, a base of stratification, and a characteristic of populations. This article covers the sociology of aging at multiple levels of social organization. Topics reviewed include the age structures of populations, the challenges posed by aging populations, the distinction between aging processes and cohort differences, the effects of social change on cohort differentiation, and the relationships between age and individual well-being.
