   Abstract:
   Our ability to measure time persists in the face of a wide variety of neural insults. In combination with the large array of neural structures that have been shown to activate during timing tasks, this resilience suggests that multiple brain networks are capable of measuring time. This article explores this apparent 'degeneracy' (a concept explained in the article) in neural systems for timing in the context of recent evidence that such degeneracy may be promoted and enhanced by consolidation across a night of sleep. We also raise the possibility that offline consolidation may promote degeneracy in other spheres (not just in timing).
