Overt and relational aggression and victimization: Multiple perspectives within the school setting. Journal of School Psychology, 45, 459-586.
(last updated on 2009/01/05)Abstract:
The current study involved a comprehensive comparative examination of overt and relational aggression and victimization across multiple perspectives in the school setting (peers, teachers, observers in the lunchroom, self-report). The present study considered the relations of aggression and victimization, as assessed by multiple perspectives in the school setting, with regard to sociometric status, race, and gender. Thus, results of the present study support earlier research finding negative outcomes associated with both forms of victimization and especially overt aggression. Poorer adjustment and a socially unskillful behavioral profile was found to be associated with these three behaviors However, relational aggression did not evidence a similar negative relationship to adjustment not was it related to many of the behaviors examined in the current study. Although these findings were found across multiple reporters and contexts within the school setting, the predominant focus was exclusively on girls. It may be that although being victimized or overtly aggressing are universally negative experiences regardless of gender, relational aggression may have a different outcome when used by boys.
