Research Summary:
My research and clinical interests include, but are not limited to, mindfulness & experimental or empirically validated treatments based on this construct for a variety of diagnoses. Mindfulness could be described as focusing attention on the present moment with acceptance of whatever is occurring in that moment. Recent and ongoing research indicates a direct link between mindfulness, increased self-control in decision making and behaviors, relief from habitual thought patterns & reactions, and general well being.
An equally important area of interest is personality disorders, especially Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). Within the myriad areas of research on BPD, I am interested in contributing to research on emotion dysregulation issues in this disorder, and how mindfulness may be an alternative strategy in the alleviation of difficult cognitive and emotional experiences. Research on how maladaptive emotion regulation strategies may create and maintain such common factors in BPD as self harm, suicidal behaviors and co-morbidity with other disorders is of particular interest.
Additional interests include: meditation; Eastern and Western approaches to
monasticism; poetry; and independent music.
NOTE: I welcome unsolicited correspondence on any of the above research or other
interests, and questions from prospective graduate students.
