Research Summary:
Stephanie H. Best graduated with a B.S. in Biology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1996. In 1999, she received her M.A. in Biological Sciences from the University of California at Santa Barbara. She is currently an advanced Ph.D. student in Clinical Psychology at Duke University. As a graduate research assistant at the Duke Child and Family Study Center, Stephanie served as a therapist in the psychosocial treatment clinic and on CAMS, a multi-site clinical trial testing the efficacy of different therapeutic modalities for child and adolescent anxiety disorders. Stephanie's clinical and research interests lie broadly in the areas of anxiety, depression, and eating disorders. She is particularly interested in the clinical applications of research to psychotherapy. Her current research focus involves the use of "third wave" behavioral therapies, particularly Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), with a variety of clinical populations. She is presently the primary therapist on a clinical trial funded by the Tourette Syndrome Association, using a combination of Habit Reversal Training and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy to help adolescents and young adults with chronic tic disorders. In her free time, Stephanie enjoys horseback riding, cookouts with friends, reading, doing yoga, and playing with her stupendously adorable basset hound, Tex.
