  • Brief Bio

    Dr. Wu is Director of International Research and Professor in the School of Nursing. She is also a member of the faculty of the Duke Global Health Institute and the Duke University Center for the Study of Aging and Human Development. In addition, she holds adjunct professor/senior fellow positions at three academic institutions in China. Dr. Wu’s areas of research expertise include gerontology and global health.

    Dr. Wu graduated from Shanghai University in the People’s Republic of China with a B.A. in sociology, and received her M.S. and Ph.D. in gerontology from the University of Massachusetts-Boston. She comes to Duke from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNC-G), where she served as an associate professor in the gerontology program since 2009. Concurrently, she served as an adjunct clinical associate professor at the School of Dentistry, West Virginia University, and also held an adjunct faculty appointment at the School of Dentistry of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Prior to joining UNC-G, Dr. Wu was an associate professor in the Department of Community Medicine at West Virginia University.

    Dr. Wu is a fellow of the Gerontological Society of America and the Association for Gerontology in Higher Education. She is the principal investigator for four projects funded by the National Institutes of Health, with her research focusing on cognitive function, depression, and oral health. She has been actively involved in CDC-funded and Alzheimer’s Association-funded projects related to promoting cognitive health among older adults for the past several years. Additionally, she is a co-investigator on a current NIA funded project to examine the influence of cultural beliefs and values on the dementia caregiving experience and care-seeking modalities in China. Dr. Wu's extensive publications cover a variety of topics related to aging and health, such as long-term care, dementia, caregiving, oral health, and health services utilization.
