
Dr. Anne Derouin joined the DUSON faculty on April 1, 2011. Dr. Derouin is a certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioner with more than 25 years’ experience in pediatric nursing, and she has strong ties to the Duke and Durham communities. She received her BSN in 1989 from the University of Michigan. She earned her MSN in 2000 and DNP in 2010, both from DUSON, and was a member of the School’s inaugural DNP cohort.
Dr. Derouin has served as a clinical nursing instructor and has co-taught several courses at DUSON for many years. For the past twelve years, she has provided primary care services for adolescents through the school-based health centers at the North Carolina School of Science and Math, the Wellness Center at Southern High School, and the Teen Clinic at Holton Community Resource Center in Durham, all affiliated with Duke’s Department of Community and Family Medicine. She has also been a frequent guest lecturer on adolescent topics for the Community and Family Medicine and Pediatrics departments at Duke.
Dr. Derouin serves as an adolescent clinical expert for the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners. She is an Advocacy Fellow for the National Assembly of School-based Health Centers and is currently serving as the executive vice-president for the North Carolina School Community Health Alliance.
Dr. Derouin teaches in the ABSN and MSN programs and is on the program committees for both programs. She also serves as a mentor for DNP capstone projects.

Dr. Derouin has strong clinical interests in:
● Adolescent health topics, including risk assessment, prevention, and treatment of adolescents who are acutely ill;
● Mental health issues that typically emerge during adolescence, including depression, anxiety and teens who self-harm;
● Women’s health issues;
● Childhood diabetes and asthma: assessment strategies, coping mechanisms, adherence to treatment, and successful educational strategies to support families and children with these diseases.
Dr. Derouin is a strong advocate for community partnerships that assist children and adolescents, particularly school-based health centers and community health centers. She also has a strong interest in public health care policy (locally and nationally) that supports universal healthcare access for children and adolescents.
