Frank Titch, Associate Professor in the Nurse Anesthesia specialty, has a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Texas at Austin. He earned a certificate in Nurse Anesthesia through the Nurse Anesthesia Program at Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center (San Antonio, TX), a Master of Science in Nurse Anesthesia at Virginia Commonwealth University/Medical College of Virginia, and the Doctor of Nursing Practice degree at Duke University.
Dr. Titch's 22 years of service in the Air Force included service as a CRNA in support of an Air Transportable Hospital on the Arabian Peninsula during Operation Desert Shield/Storm and as Chief Anesthetist for four regional Air Transportable Hospitals in theater. He also served as a CRNA at USAF hospitals in England and New Mexico; Chief Nurse Anesthetist, Interim Chief/Anesthesia Element, and General Surgery Flight Commander at USAF Hospital Scott in Illinois; Consultant for Nurse Anesthesia in the Office of the Air Force Surgeon General; and Assistant Professor at the Uniformed Service University in Bethesda, Maryland.
Before his appointment to the DUSON faculty, Dr. Titch was a consulting associate in the Nurse Anesthesia Specialty at DUSON and was clinically active at the Veterans Administration Medical Center (VAMC) in Durham. At DUSON, he directed nurse anesthesia program for over four years and served as lead faculty for eight different courses in the program. Dr. Titch's research and clinical interests are currently focused on development of best practices in anesthesia during ECT therapy in collaboration with VAMC Durham, including a DNP capstone project on "Implementation and Evaluation of the Innovative Use of Bispectral Index Monitoring to Enhance Assessment of Anesthetic Depth and Prevent Patient Awareness During Electroconvulsive Therapy". Other interests include techniques of regional anesthesia and curriculum development for nurse anesthesia education.

Project Goal: The purpose of this project is to increase the number of Masters prepared Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNAs) practicing in rural, medically underserved areas of North Carolina by developing and implementing a distance learning component to our existing Nurse Anesthesia Program and by partnering with our existing hospital based clinical sites in rural / medically underserved areas to identify, recruit and enroll qualified nurses in the distance learning option.
Evaluation of the Relationship Between Velocity of Cerebral Blood Flow, Cerebral Tissue Oxygen Saturation, and Mean Arterial Pressure in Sitting Orthopedic Shoulder Surgery
American Association of Nurse Anesthetists Foundation;
07/2009-12/2010
Role: Co-investigator
Project Goal: The primary objective of this study is to examine the effects of blood pressure changes on cerebral blood flow velocity and cerebral oxygenation in patients undergoing sitting shoulder surgery to determine if these measures may be useful surrogates for estimating the effects of changes in systemic blood pressure on cerebral blood flow.
