
Dr. John Brion teaches several courses in the ABSN program (most recently Foundations and Physical Assessment, Community Health Nursing, and Health Promotion), and is engaged in an ongoing federally funded initiative that is significantly expanding the capacity of the program.
Dr. Brion received a BA in history from Clarion University of Pennsylvania before earning a BSN and MS in Adult Health Nursing and two Bachelor of Arts degrees (in psychology and sociology), all at The Ohio State University. He is a member of national honor societies in nursing (Sigma Theta Tau), psychology (Psi Chi), sociology (Alpha Kappa Delta), and history (Phi Alpha Theta). Dr. Brion earned his PhD in Nursing in 2007, also at The Ohio State University. His doctoral research focused on treatment adherence in gay men living with HIV. Dr. Brion's research interests include psychosocial aspects of chronic illness and HIV.
Dr. Brion's clinical expertise is in adult health and emergency/trauma nursing. He has served as the administrator of the Ohio Department of Health AIDS Drug Assistance Program (ADAP), the Executive Director of the Ohio Board of Nursing, and a member of the Board of Directors of the National Council of State Boards of Nursing. He is currently active in the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care and the American Assembly of Men in Nursing.

Investigate the applicability of laboratory based research findings related to the concept of Self-compassion into clinical practice by: 1) creating a clinically appropriate, psychometrically sound version of the self Compassion assessment scale; and 2) use the new instrument to conduct a clinical investigation of the concept of self-compassion in people living with HIV infection and the possible impact on treatment adherence.
