Feasibility of a Stigma Reduction Intervention for HIV-infected Women
National Institutes of Health
1R21-NR012415-01A1
04/2011-02/2013
Role: PI
Project Goal: The primary aim of the proposed study is to assess the feasibility, acceptability and utility of implementing this low-cost, technologically delivered intervention to mitigate the negative effects of HIV-related stigma on seropositive women. The secondary aim is to compare outcomes across time in women who receive the stigma intervention with those of a control group receiving usual care at baseline, 30, and 90 days, and to determine effect sizes for a larger definitive study to test the efficacy of this intervention in reducing internalized stigma, improving coping self-efficacy and self-esteem, and facilitating safe disclosure in HIV-infected women.

Fatigue in HIV-Positive People
National Institutes of Health
1R01-NR008681-01A1
09/2004-05/2009
Role: PI
Project Goal: To better understand fatigue in HIV-positive people and identify predictors of its occurrence and change, we propose to conduct a prospective, longitudinal study to address three aims: 1) to determine the level, circumstances, and consequences of fatigue in a group of community-dwelling HIV-positive individuals; 2) to determine at baseline the relationship of personal, HIV-related, physiological, psychosocial, and sleep quality variables to fatigue in HIV-positive individuals; and 3) to determine prospectively the relationship of personal and HIV-related variables, and changes in physiological, psychosocial, and sleep quality variables to chronicity of fatigue (percentage of visits fatigued, level of fatigue over time) in HIV-positive individuals.

06/2005-03/2006
Role: PI on subcontract from UNC-CH
Project Goal: The aim of the proposed study is directed toward developing methods for conducting mixed research integration studies. We will use studies of stigma and of antiretroviral (ARV) adherence in HIV-positive women to accomplish the specific objectives of the study, which are to: (a) clarify the relationships between qualitative and quantitative research findings in common research areas; (b) develop research designs for mixed research integration studies that accommodate these relationships; (c) develop analytic techniques to link or transform qualitative and quantitative research findings for combination; and to (d) produce credible and usable integrations of findings using these techniques. The long-term aims of the study are to facilitate the appropriate utilization of all kinds of empirical research findings in practice and to expand the methodological options available to accommodate the diversity in health research.

07/2000-06/2005
Role: PI on subcontract from UNC-CH
Project Goal: The aim of this study is to develop the analytic and interpretive techniques to conduct qualitative metasynthesis projects, using research on women with HIV/AIDS as the "method case" and research on couples undergoing prenatal testing as the "test case." The long-term goals are to advance substantive knowledge in the field of HIV/AIDS and prenatal diagnostic technology and to advance qualitative methodology. The project will enhance the analytic power of qualitative research findings so that the understandings of human experience contained in them can serve as a basis for improved research and health care practices.
