Dr. Jim Vroom, an Associate Consulting Professor in the School of Nursing since 2002, currently teaches courses in the Nursing and Healthcare Leadership specialty to both MSN and DNP students. He is also Associate Professor in the School of Business at Pfeiffer University. Since 1998, he has taught courses in strategy, leadership theory, leadership development, organizational change, organizational theory, quality management, operations, marketing, policy, and finance in Pfeiffer’s Master of Science in Leadership (MSL), MBA, and MHA Programs. From 2004 to 2007, he responsible for developing a new division of Pfeiffer University in the Triangle with graduate business programs serving nearly 300 students at four different locations. Dr. Vroom is also a frequent participant in leadership programs at the Center for Creative Leadership in Greensboro, North Carolina.
Dr. Vroom completed a BA cum laude in economics and policy sciences with a concentrations in healthcare and educational administration at Duke University in 1976. Supported by a Graduate Program in Healthcare Administration Merit Scholarship, he earned a Master’s degree in Health Administration with concentration in finance from Duke University in 1978. While pursuing that degree, he also completed leading to licensure as a Certified Public Accountant. He completed a doctorate in Health Administration and Leadership (DHA) with an emphasis on leadesrhip and organizational change at the Medical University of South Carolina in 2002. His dissertation research focusing on the effect of direct contracting on the attitudes and behavior of healthcare providers.
Dr. Vroom is a Fellow (R) of the American College of Healthcare Executives and a member of the North Carolina Association of Certified Public Accountants, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, and the Center for Creative Leadership. His career includes over 30 years of experience as an educator and healthcare administrator, including senior positions in North Carolina hospitals (Wake Medical Center, Western Wake Medical Center, Alleghany Memorial Hospital, Vencor Hospital and Healthcare Network), ownership of a management services group/ consulting practice specializing in healthcare and educational organizations in transition, and service as Commanding Officer of two different Reserve Units supporting the Naval Hospital in Charleston, SC. A distinguished retired officer in the United States Navy, Dr. Vroom has received the Navy Commendation Medal and numerous other decorations for outstanding leadership.
