Karin Reuter-Rice is a nationally renowned pediatric acute care nurse practitioner and a Fellow of the American College of Critical Care Medicine. Dr. Reuter-Rice is co-editor of the first pediatric acute care multidisciplinary text (Pediatric Acute Care: A Guide for Interprofessional Practice, published in July, 2011.
Dr. Reuter-Rice came to DUSON from Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego, CA, where she practiced in a tertiary care pediatric ICU. She holds a diploma in nursing from the University of Alberta Hospital School of Nursing in Canada. She earned her BSN, MSN (with specialization as a Family and Pediatric Nurse Practitioner), and PhD in Nursing from the University of San Diego. The findings from her dissertation research on psychosocial responses by adolescent male victims to peer bullying are potentially applicable to the development of interventions to identify high school students at risk for victimization and school violence.
Dr. Reuter-Rice has been a reviewer for national practice documents such as the AACN National Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Scope of Practice and the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF) Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Entry-Level Competencies in Graduate Education. She is the Pediatric Nursing Certification Board member on the task force revising national nurse practitioner curricular guidelines as part of the 2011 NONPF Task Force Criteria initiative. She serves on the editorial boards of several professional journals and currently co-edits the Case Studies/Acute and Subspecialty section for the Journal of Pediatric Health Care. Dr. Reuter-Rice chairs the Acute Care Special Interest Group of the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners (NAPNAP). She also served as Acute Care PNP Member-at-Large, Executive Committee member, and Secretary of the Pediatric Nursing Certification Board, and continues to represent NAPNAP as the Acute Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner representative to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing LACE Network. She is the 2013 recipient of the Henry K. Silver Memorial Award, presented by NAPNAP for her contributions to the expansion or improvement of pediatric health care and the advancement of the profession of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners at the national and/or international level.

Relationship of Endothelin-1 and Cerebral Vasospasm in Pediatric Traumatic Brain Injury
Robert Wood Johnson Foundation
71244
09/2013-08/2016
Project Goals: The aims of this study explore the relationships between cerebral vasospasm, endothelin 1 biomarker, endothelin 1 gene polymorphisms, and functional outcomes in children with a traumatic brain injury. Exploring the Endothelin 1 biomarker and gene polymorphisms will help us know if cerebral vasospasm can be identified in certain children and will aid in developing interventional approaches to promote improved outcomes.
Physiologic Adaptation and Neurocognitive Outcomes in Pediatric Traumatic Brain Injury
National Institutes of Health
1P30-NR014139-01
09/2012-06/2017
Project Goals: The aims of this study explore the relationships between cerebral vasospasm, apolipoprotein-E (apo-E) genotype, physiologic symptoms, and neurocognitive outcomes that may either intensify or ameliorate secondary injury, for children with a traumatic brain injury. Exploring the apo-E genotype will help us know if injury response is altered in certain children and will aid in developing interventional approaches.

06/2011-05/2012
Role: Principal Investigator
This is a prospective feasibility pilot study that will measure cerebral vasospasm using a Transcranial Doppler ultrasound and collect biomarkers while examining neurocognitive outcomes in a traumatic brain injured child.
