Kathryn A. Wood, PhD, RN

  • Brief Bio

    Dr. Wood teaches courses in both the MSN (Adult Nurse Practitioner-Cardiovascular Care specialty) and the Doctor of Nursing Practice programs. She received her BSN from Brenau College (Gainesville, GA) and her MSN from the University of Alabama, Birmingham in Cardiovascular Nursing. She earned a PhD in Physiological Nursing and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in symptom management at the University of California, San Francisco.

    Dr. Wood’s clinical experience has included operating room, emergency, critical care, electrophysiology lab, and cardiovascular ICU settings. Before coming to Duke, she previously worked as a clinical specialist in critical care and cardiovascular settings in Hawaii, California, Ohio, and Georgia, in addition to spending five years in the cardiac medical device industry. Dr. Wood is active professionally in the Heart Rhythm Society, the American Nurses Association, Sigma Theta Tau, the Southern Nursing Research Society and the American Heart Association, where she is a member of the Cardiovascular Nursing Council. She serves as a reviewer for multiple cardiac and critical care journals.

    Dr. Wood’s interests include both qualitative and quantitative methods focusing on the diagnostic process and symptom experiences of patients with arrhythmias. Her research interests include symptoms and quality of life in arrhythmia patients, gender differences in symptoms and access to care for patients with supraventricular arrhythmias, outcomes of ablation, and device treatment in patients with atrial fibrillation.
