Consulting Professor

  • Brief Bio

Dr. Pamela Mitchell (Consulting Professor) is assisting in the development of the structure for the Duke Translational Nursing Institute (DTNI), developing the DTNI focus on Models of Care, and providing assistance in the development of the business case for translational science in nursing. Dr. Mitchell is Professor of Nursing in the Biobehavioral Nursing & Health Systems Department at the University of Washington (UW) School of Nursing, Professor of Clinical Education at Harborview Medical Center, Adjunct Professor in the Department of Health Services of the UW School of Public Health and Community Medicine, Director of the UW Center for Health Sciences Interprofessional Education, and Co-Director of the Research Education Core of the UW Institute of Translational Health Sciences.

Dr. Mitchell has over 30 years of experience in research that blends clinical and health services research, particularly with people who have critical and chronic neurological disorders and conditions. For over a decade, she has led interdisciplinary research teams in testing interventions to improve recovery from brain injury and has both led and participated in interdisciplinary research training grants. Her research investigates fundamental physiologic factors influencing the responses of critically ill neurologic/neurosurgical patients to ordinary nursing care activities, clinical and translational trials aimed at improving recovery in chronic cardiocerebrovascular illness, and comparative effectiveness of care delivery systems as they influence patient outcomes.

Dr. Mitchell is a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing and served as its President from 2007 to 2009. She is a Fellow of the American Heart/American Stroke Association, has chaired the Stroke Council Nursing and Rehabilitation Professions Committee, and currently serves on the American Stroke Association Advisory Board. She has also chaired the American Academy of Nursing Expert Panel on Quality Care and the Initial Review Group of the National Institute of Nursing Research, and has served on the Steering Committee for the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality Patient Safety Research Coordinating Center, the Department of Defense Patient Safety Teamwork Study Advisory Panel, and the Institute of Medicine Committee on Work Environments in Nursing and Patient Safety. Recent honors include the Friends of the National Institute of Nursing Research Pathfinder Distinguished Research Award (2007), the University of Washington School of Nursing Distinguished Research Award (2010), and the Sigma Theta Tau International Research Hall of Fame (2010). Dr. Mitchell has been selected to receive the 2011 Ada Sue Hinshaw Award of the Friends of the National Institute of Nursing Research in recognition of her sustained work as a nursing researcher whose science has been widely disseminated throughout healthcare settings.
