Brief Bio

Dr. Valerie Sabol serves as the Specialty Coordinator of the Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (ACNP) specialty in the MSN Program and teaches several courses within the specialty. She also co-teaches the Advanced Pharmacology course. Before coming to DUSON, she was the Program Director of the Trauma, Critical Care, and Emergency CNS/ACNP Masters Program at the University of Maryland for eleven years, with a clinical practice in the surgical intermediate care unit at the University of Maryland Medical Center. Currently, she practices as an ACNP in the intensive care unit at both Duke Raleigh Hospital and Durham Regional Hospital.

She received her BSN degree from Penn State University and a MSN degree as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner from the University of Pennsylvania. She earned her PhD in Nursing at the University of Maryland. She has over 20 years of critical care experience and is board certified as both an Adult Acute Care and Geriatric Nurse Practitioner.

Dr. Sabol’s clinical and research interests include translating and implementing evidence-based practices into the care of both obese and older adults in acute and critical care settings. Dr. Sabol is on the Editorial Board and the Advanced Practice Column Department Editor for the AACN Advanced Critical Care journal, the Chair of the Research Committee for the Gerontological Advanced Practice Association (GAPNA), and the Vice President of Pi Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International. She is also a member of the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF), American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP), and the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN).
