    Abstract:
Discontinuities in the electrical properties of cardiac tissue are known to exist at several levels. A computer model of a one dimensional cardiac fiber is used to examine the effects of periodic resistive discontinuities on conduction. Simulations indicate that the shape of the action potential and the propagation velocity are affected by a number of parameters which include the size and frequency of the coupling resistance and the membrane kinetics. Under certain conditions, however, both a discontinuous and a continuous fiber model predict similar macroscopic behavior
