    Abstract:
    The paper presents a discussion on a novel medical imaging diagnostic technique for micron scale cross sectional imaging called optical coherence tomography (OCT). In OCT, low coherence interferometry is employed to measure internal microstructure in biological tissues by performing high resolution optical ranging of reflected or backscattered light. An OCT system is comprised of a compact superluminescent diode coupled into a fiber optic Michelson interferometer. To enhance imaging in scattering tissues OCT can be integrated with confocal microscopy. A modified single backscattering theoretical model was developed to identify and predict limits in the imaging capabilities of both confocal microscopy and OCT. The applications of OCT in studies of structures in the anterior eye and retina in human subjects and as a diagnostic for ocular disease are also discussed.
