    Abstract:
This essentially tutorial paper describes, quantitatively, the bioelectric sources corresponding to a propagated action potential with particular emphasis on a cylindrical nerve or muscle fiber of infinite or finite length. The subsequent description of the resultant extracellular fields is based on these formulations and provides insights that although intuitive are not necessarily lacking in quantitative rigor. Since the medium (volume conductor) is linear and resistive and since the fields satisfy Poisson's equation, standard field theoretic methods are used. This paper should prove useful in providing a background for signals which arise in electrocardiography, electromyography, electroencephalography, and other such systems in electrophysiology.
