    Abstract:
The speed of sound was measured as a function of temperature to determine whether these measurements have the stability, repeatability and freedom from artifact to qualify speed as a scan parameter in a CT ultrasound thermal mapping system. This system would provide thermal dosimetry for the treatment of cancer by hyperthermia. Measurements were made using a 5 MHz pulse transmission velocimeter on a number of canine tissues both in vitro and in vivo. Measurements were also made in vivo on extracorporeal blood and on a number of malignant tumors. Biochemical fractions were taken from the insonified volumes, and speed fit to a multiple regression model involving these fractions and temperature
