    Abstract:
In the past few years we have been studying the potential of poly(phosphoesters) as biomaterials, including applications in drug delivery. These polymers allow direct linkage of bioactive compounds to the phosphorus atom to form a pendant release system. The biodegradability of these polymers stems from the hydrolytically vulnerable phosphoester bond in the backbone. Polyurethane on the other hand is biostable. It has superior physical properties and has been extensively studied for biomedical applications. To combine biodegradability and desirable mechanical strength, we examine the synthesis and characterization of polyurethanes which include a phosphoester bond in the backbone.
