    Abstract:
The phase shift upon reflection from interfaces can be used to control propagation characteristics such as mode profile and chromatic dispersion. We demonstrate this in the case of efficient second harmonic generation in diffused channel waveguides. It has been shown that SHG efficiency can be increased by as much as 37 % and 78 % in KTP and LiTaO3 waveguides respectively, with specially-designed overlays. This design technique can be extended to compensation of birefringence-induced effects as well
