    Abstract:
Mesoscale circulations generated by landscape discontinuities are not represented in large-scale atmospheric models, which have an inappropriate grid-scale resolution. The authors develop a set of prognostic equations that can be used in large-scale atmospheric models for momentum, temperature, moisture, and any other gaseous or aerosol material, and that include both mesoscale and turbulent fluxes. Prognostic equations for these mesoscale fluxes indicate a closure problem, and therefore require a parameterisation. For this purpose the mean mesoscale kinetic energy (MKE) per unit mass is used, defined as E˜=0.5⟨u'i2⟩, where u'i represents the three Cartesian components of a mesoscale circulation. A prognostic equation is developed for E¯. A model is used to investigate the relationship between MKE, landscape discontinuities, and mesoscale sensible and latent heat fluxes. MKE is compared with turbulence kinetic energy to illustrate the relative importance of mesoscale and turbulent processes
