    Abstract:
Simulations of bedload transport predict that the active layer of transported grains on a sediment bed is a zone of vertical diffusion of sediment particles. Shallow exhumation and burial of grains is possible in the absence of either erosion or deposition. The thickness of the diffusion layer is predicted to be proportional to the applied surface traction.
