    Abstract:
A model is proposed for the enrichment of the heavier constituent at surface layers of binary alloys and compounds subjected to sputtering beams. The key assumption is that there is rapid equilibrium of the energy extracted from the beam among all members of secondary cascades regardless of the mass of these members. Estimates of the thicknesses of the enriched layers are given or alternatively if this is known the time constant for equilibration may be obtained
