    Abstract:
What has been accomplished to date on the question of how to minimize and allocate the heat exchanger inventory in power plants and refrigeration plants is discussed. The three main conclusions of this note are 1. It is possible to use a simple model to arrive at conclusion that the power plant with minimum heat exchanger equipment (i.e., cost) and fixed power output has the same efficiency as the power plant designed for maximum power. 2. Refrigeration plants with specified mechanical power input can be optimized by minimizing their aggregate heat exchanger inventory. 3. Refrigeration plants with specified refrigeration load can also be designed for minimum total heat exchanger inventory.
