The author discusses how buckling flow has become a new area in fluid mechanics research because of numerous natural flow phenomena which exhibit geometric features which can be compared with classical buckling of solid elastic columns. The most striking feature of these flows is the deformation of the straight stream into a sinusoidal shape whose wavelength is characteristic (i.e., reproducible, not random).
