The use of irreversibility as a criterion for evaluation of the efficiency of a heat exchanger is demonstrated. The purpose is to minimize the wasted energy by optimum design of fluid passages in a heat exchanger. The interrelationship between the losses caused by heat transfer across the stream-to-stream due to differences in temperatures and losses caused by fluid friction was studied. A proposal is made to use the number of entropy production units as a basic yardstick in describing the heat exchanger performance. Keywords:
