    Abstract:
    The application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques to failure analysis is demonstrated by a failure analysis expert system (FAXS). This computer-based consultation system is designed to aid the engineering student or professional lacking formal training in failure analysis and prevention. FAXS' rule-based deduction algorithm relates failure loading and environmental conditions, macro-and microscopic features of the failed component, and applicable test results of material properties to possible modes and causes of failure. The system uses a probabilistic scheme, based on confirmation theory, to combine evidence of varying strength into a quantitative confidence in its failure diagnoses. Presented are details of the algorithm's strategy for dynamically guiding a thorough failure analyses while tending to minimize the number of time-consuming and costly tests and data acquisition required.
