    Abstract:
Failure Analysis is the engineering discipline which identifies the cause of mechanical failure and recommends corrective action for failure prevention. This activity is important in the prevention of future problems in similar designs and in decisions regarding the settlement of litigations. Duke University has been active for two years in the development of an expert system which will aid and extend the abilities of engineers and material scientists performing a failure analysis.
