A conceptual and computational duality is established for the addition and deletion of structural elements using a component mode analysis technique. This approach should be useful for re-analyzing structural systems with modifications. The technique is based upon constraint condition and Lagrange multiplier techniques. Two simple illustrative examples including variations have been presented. The approach suggested here is straightforward and should be useful in applications. In particular, no difficulty is encountered when the number of degrees of freedom is changed due to a structural modification.
