    Abstract:
The vibration of a flexible structure immersed in a fluid flow is considered. Particular attention is devoted to plate and shell configurations typical of local structure on flight vehicles. The relationship of forced vibration (due to turbulent boundary layer pressure fluctuations, `noise') to self excited vibration (due to fluid-solid instability, `flutter') is the main theme of the paper. An attempt is made to summarize the state-of-the-art and to indicate how what have been divergent paths in the past might usefully merge into a single path in the future
