    Abstract:
Shankar and Keane (ibid., vol. 185, p. 867-90, (1995) have shown how the notion of a Green's function representation for individual components (e.g. beams) may be used effectively to determine the power flow through an assemblage of components (e.g. joined beams). The Green's functions are represented in terms of their modal expansions. As Shankar and Keane note, typically many modes are needed to obtain sufficient accuracy, i.e. the sum in the equation is slowly convergent. The purposes of the present comment are twofold. Firstly, it is to point out that the equation may be rearranged to accelerate substantially its convergence and, secondly, it is to note that the Green's function modal expansion has been used in component mode synthesis by previous investigators
