    Abstract:
The notion of suppressing structural vibrations is of paramount importance for enhancing safety and improving system performance. This paper briefly reports the advances made in the area of vibration suppression via recently developed innovative techniques (for example, constrained layer damping (CLD) treatments) applied to civilian and military structures. A number of research projects have been sponsored and supported by the United States Army Research Office (ARO) that have led to very promising and exciting results in this area. Typically, these research projects relate to themes such as developing and evaluating the performance of novel active-passive hybrid smart structures for real-time vibration control; developing theoretical equations that govern the vibration of smart structural systems treated with piezomagnetic constrained layer damping treatments; and developing innovative surface damping treatments using micro-cellular foams and active standoff constrained layer (ASCL) treatments. The results obtained from the above and several other vibration suppression oriented research projects being carried out under the ARO sponsorship are included in the paper. In addition, recommendations are made for future research directions that are likely to yield most fruitful results and thus meet the urgent needs in this area for both the civilian and the military sectors
