The biosynthetic response of the chondrocyte is dependent on the mechanical environment of the cell. In this paper, we examine mechanical interactions between the chondrocyte and the surrounding extracellular matrix using a linear biphasic finite element model. Results show that the mechanical environment in the immediate vicinity of the cell is highly dependent on the relative differences between the material properties of the cell and the matrix.
