A linear biphasic finite element model is used to map the temporal and spatial response of articular cartilage to sinusoidal and intermittent loading. Such mapping is relevant to explant culture studies which examine effect of mechanical loading on tissue biosynthetic response. Results show that tissue mechanical response is highly dependent on loading parameters such as tissue confinement and cycling frequency.
