    A thermodynamic (energy) analysis of the tether formation is presented and then applied to experimental studies of the formation of tethers from red cells and nerve growth cones. The bending modulus for red-cell-membrane tethers is calculated and the far-field membrane surface tension in nerve growth cones is estimated. Moreover, values for the various dissipation factors (viscosities) involved in the tether-formation process are calculated.
