    The finite deformation, anisotropic, biphasic finite element model of cell matrix interactions in the intervertebral disc was discussed. The model was used as a reference for validation of the nonlinear FEM predictions at equilibrium. The results suggested that zonal differences in cell micromechanical environment play a role in known differences in the biosynthetic response of the disc cells.
