    The objective of this study was to develop a non-contacting optical method to quantify the shape changes in cartilage in vitro, as a first step toward determining a potential mechanical role for the swelling-induced residual stresses and strain in cartilage in situ. Rectangular strips of articular cartilage prepared from the lateral facet of skeletally-mature bovine patella were placed in a glass dish and allowed to equilibrate in NaCl solution. A calibration cylinder was affixed within each glass dish. Both the cylinder and the strips were photographed. The images were analyzed for dimensional changes. All the samples demonstrated the characteristic curling and swelling behaviors after removal from the subchondral bone, and in response to changes in the concentration of the external bath.
