The biological response of the meniscus to static compression was quantified as changes in gene expression levels for relevant extracellular matrix proteins. Decreased mRNA levels for decorin and type I collagen were observed, as well as increased mRNA levels for the matrix metalloproteinase MMP-1. These findings demonstrate that the response of the meniscus to mechanical stimuli may be regulated in part at the transcriptional levelKeywords:
