∑ Convenor and Advisor for $450,000 FIPSE Grant: “Scholarship with a Civic Mission”. The Kenan Institute for Ethics was awarded this grant to develop a research service-learning program at Duke. Bio 46 was highlighted in the grant as one of the three ‘Gateway Courses’ for engaging students in service learning as a new pedagogy. The FIPSE grant establishes three structured pathways for research service learning at Duke: Public Health Inequalities; Humanitarian Issues and Human Rights; and Human Development and Education. I have been asked by Elizabeth Kiss, the Director of the Kenan Institute for Ethics and co-PI on the grant, to be the Convener for the Public Health Inequalities pathway and guide the implementation of the grant in this area. Thus I have become central to a university wide initiative for pedagogical reform that is receiving national recognition.
