    English, 2007/11/06 09:08:48

The Working Group on Political Theory has been convened to promote the study and research of political philosophic texts from the fourteenth through the twentieth centuries. Through a series of monthly meetings, as well as a spring symposium (at which Duke Faculty and distinguished scholars from other institutions will offer a series of presentations), this Group seeks to foster an interdisciplinary discussion of classic texts in the history of political philosophy, and to encourage the production of scholarly papers and articles on topics related to this theme. The Working Group on Political Theory is sponsored by the Duke English Department, and has been convened by Michael Valdez Moses (Associate Professor, English) and Robert Mitchell (Assistant Professor, English). Current participants include faculty and graduate students from the departments of Economics, English, Literature, Philosophy, Political Science, Religion, and Romance Languages. [more]

  • 2008 USTA League Tennis Play
    Duke Faculty Club, 2007/11/28 13:55:37

TennisCalling all DFC tennis players!! It's not too early to begin thinking about spring 2008 USTA league tennis play! Spring teams form in January and February, and league play happens from early March through early June. At this point, we are thinking that DFC will field women's teams at the 2.5, 3.0, and 3.5 levels (probably mostly evening, but we are open to the idea of daytime if demand exists), and men's teams at the 3.5 and 4.0 levels (evening play). Play at other levels is an option if enough interest exists! USTA play is a lot of fun! Teams typically play one night per week either at DFC courts (when home) or away at other clubs in the area. In the spring USTA season, teams field 2 courts of singles and 3 courts of doubles for each match. Teams can contain 14 individuals, and only 8 play on a given night, so not everyone plays every week. As a player, you can estimate that your playing commitment will be about 4 to 6 matches over the 3 month period (the exact number of matches depends on number of teams in each league). Even if you have never participated in USTA League play before, we welcome you to give it a try. You'll meet a lot of fun people, and play some great tennis! If you are interested, or think you might be interested, or have any questions about USTA league play, please contact Kelly Baker (DFC pro) at kelly.baker@duke.edu (or see him on the courts!), or Charlotte Clark (club member) at cclark@duke.edu. You must let us know of your interest by early February so we can determine what teams we want to field at each level. The January newsletter will contain a specific notification deadline date. See you on the courts!!!

    October 19, 8 P.M.-Midnight

    Computer/Service: AAS4/Webserver
    Work: Upgrade
    Duration: 5 minutes
    Summary: Simple reboot
    Contact: admin@aas.duke.edu

    Details:
The server AAS4 is one of two web servers, which share the web load because they have identical setups and files. These webservers, or mirrors, are both in need of an upgrade from CentOS 3 to CentOS 4. It is easiest to do this by the following process - have all web pages served from one mirror for a short while. Upgrade and test one mirror, then make it live and clone the other mirror from it.

The step that will affect end-users during this maintenance period is the ‘live’ step. That will take approximately 5 minutes, being just a reboot, with minimal down time anticipated for any of the webpages hosted by Arts & Sciences.

As always, please contact admin@aas.duke.edu if you have any questions.

    Optimal Transport and Riemannian Geometry

1 - The Monge-Kantorovich problem: The Monge-Kantorovich problem asks about the most economic way to transport matter from one prescribed distribution to another one. Born in France around the time of the Revolution, this problem has become a classic one in probability and economics. At the end of the eighties, the independent works of Brenier, Cullen and Mather announced a sharp turn of the theory, with renewed interest by the analysts. The speaker will present a summary of the modern theory of this problem.
    Monday, May 5, 2008 at 4:00 p.m. in Physics 128

2 - Monge, Boltzmann and Ricci: Starting from works of Otto and Villani, it was understood that Ricci curvature bounds are intimately linked with the behavior of Boltzmann's entropy functional along geodesics (in the space of probability measures on the manifold of interest) induced by the optimal transport problem. This observation can be exploited to give a new point of view of Ricci curvature, with probabilistic and geometric applications (one is the weak stability of Ricci curvature bounds, which was proven independently by Lott and Villani, and by Sturm).
    Tuesday, May 6, 2008 at 4:00 p.m. in Physics 119

3 - Regularity, curvature and the cut locus: The regularity of optimal transport in curved geometry is a singularly difficult problem because of the sharp interaction between geometry and analysis. In connection with this problem a new curvature tensor has been introduced by Ma, Trudinger and Wang; it plays a key role in the analysis of the smoothness of optimal transport. As shown in a work with Loeper, this tensor also has striking implications about the shape of the cut locus.
