The Large Hadron Collider at CERN delivered long-awaited 7 TeV proton collisions at the end of March. The Duke ATLAS group played a key role in constructing one of the main detector components the Transition Radiation Tracker.
The T2K experiment detects its first neutrino at Super-K. The neutrino traveled 295 km across Japan from an accelerator north of Tokyo to the massive Super-K detector located beneath the Japanese Alps.

Prof. Steffen Bass awarded a Cyber-enabled Discovery and Innovation grant for Advanced Modeling and Data Analysis. This project will bring together scientists from Michigan State, Duke and UNC in Nuclear Physics, Cosmology, Astophysics, Athmospheric Sciences, Statistical Sciences and Computer Science to develop novel statistical analysis and advanced visualization techniques.

Prof. Daniel Gauthier was recently named a Topical Editor of the Optical Society of America's Optics Letters for a 3-year term. The journal publishes the latest research in optical science, including optical measurements, optical components and devices, atmospheric optics, biomedical optics, Fourier optics, integrated optics, optical processing, optoelectronics, lasers, nonlinear optics, optical storage and holography, optical coherence, polarization, quantum electronics, ultrafast optical phenomena, photonic crystals, and fiber optics.

The family of Alfred T. Goshaw, James B. Duke Professor of Physics, contributed $250,000 to endow support for a graduate fellowship in physics research. The gift from the Goshaw Family Endowment Fund was made as part of Duke’s Financial Aid Initiative, a four-year effort to raise endowment funds to support undergraduate scholarships and graduate and professional school fellowships. The initiative raised $308.5 million, surpassing its $300 million goal. [more]

Prof. Joshua Socolar was recently named to the Editorial Board of the American Physical Society's Physical Review E for a 3-year term starting January 1, 2009. The journal is interdisciplinary in scope, focuses on many-body phenomena, including recent developments in quantum and classical chaos and soft matter physics. It has sections on statistical physics, equilibrium and transport properties of fluids, liquid crystals, complex fluids, polymers, chaos, fluid dynamics, plasma physics, classical physics, and computational physics. In addition, the journal features sections on two rapidly growing areas: biological physics and granular materials.

Prof. Steffen Bass has accepted an invitation to serve on the Editorial Board of the Institute of Physics' Journal of Physics G. The journal covers theoretical and experimental topics in the physics of elementary particles and fields, intermediate-energy physics and nuclear physics. The particle astrophysics section includes all aspects of experimental and theoretical research into cosmic rays, nuclear and particle astrophysics, gamma ray astronomy, neutrino astrophysics and dark matter.

On December 8, Prof. Kate Scholberg was named the Anne T. and Robert M. Bass Associate Professor of Physics, which includes membership in the Bass Society of Fellows. The Bass Chairs are awarded for excellence in teaching and research and it one of the highest honors bestowed on a Duke faculty member. She will hold the Bass Chair from July 1, 2008 through June 30, 2013.

On November 17, Prof. Ashutosh Kotwal was named a Fellow of the American Physical Society. Election to Fellowship is limited to no more than one half of one percent of the membership and is recognition by peers of outstanding contribution to physics.
