I purse this subject through a theologically informed reading of the 1845 Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass . Taking Douglass's Narrative as emblematic of how identity continues to be conceived, I explain what is promising in the close link forged between religion, theology and culture. The promise of Douglass's Narrative resides in the emancipatory politics of race that it produces and the creative use of the theology of Easter in that politics. But I also explore the contradictions arising from that link—in particular, Douglass's oppressive gender politics. To overcome this problem, I conclude the article by pushing Douglass's cultural reading of identity and the Cross in a more robust theological direction, a direction that gestures towards a theology of Israel and of Pentecost.}, Doi = {10.1111/j.1468-0025.2005.00274.x}, Key = {fds289898} } @article{fds289894, Author = {Carter, JK}, Title = {The inglorious: With and Beyond Giorgio Agamben}, Journal = {Political Theology}, Volume = {14}, Number = {1}, Pages = {77-87}, Year = {2013}, Month = {January}, ISSN = {1462-317X}, url = {http://dx.doi.org/10.1179/pol.14.1.9n3ml4002675610k}, Doi = {10.1179/pol.14.1.9n3ml4002675610k}, Key = {fds289894} } @article{fds289886, Author = {Carter, JK}, Title = {The Politics of the Atonement}, Journal = {The Immanent Frame}, Year = {2011}, url = {http://blogs.ssrc.org/tif/2011/07/18/the-politics-of-the-atonement/}, Key = {fds289886} } @article{fds289895, Author = {Carter, JK}, Title = {Theology, exegesis, and the just society: Gregory of Nyssa as abolitionist intellectual}, Journal = {Ex Auditu}, Volume = {22}, Pages = {181-212}, Year = {2006}, Month = {January}, ISSN = {0883-0053}, url = {http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&db=rfh&AN=ATLA0001587258&site=ehost-live&scope=site}, Key = {fds289895} } @article{fds289885, Author = {Carter, JK}, Title = {Whiteness as a False Reality: The Baptismal Identity of ‘the now, but not yet.’}, Journal = {Comment}, Volume = {32}, Number = {15}, Year = {2006}, Key = {fds289885} } | |
