The book offers the first comprehensive overview of nationalism's impact on pre-war French art, which it complements with synthetic studies of three figures affected by these political and artistic debates: the painters Maurice Denis (Catholic revival) and Emile Bernard ('Renaissance francaise), as well as the critic Joachim Gasquet (Action française). Yet the conflicts generated around certain statues necessitate a more dynamic reading of this phenomenon, which mobilized strong political and confessional dissent. The examples of demonstrations mounted by Catholics and royalists around statues to Joan of Arc, and by socialists and freethinkers around the monument to Etienne Dolet, who had been burned at the stake in 1546, highlight the ways in which opponents of the regime could use the past, and its symbolic presence on the city street, to assert their factional interests. These episodes also underline the extent to which public monuments' meanings could change under the pressure of unfolding political events. /// Les historiens ont tendance à voir dans la prolifération de monuments aux "grands hommes" qui a marqué les années entre 1880 et 1914 le symbole du triomphe d'une idéologic d'humanisme libéral au cœur de la démocratic républicaine. Cependant, les conflits générés autour de certaines statues imposent une lecture plus dynamique de ce phénomène, capable de mobiliser de vives oppositions politiques et confessionnelles. Yet the conflicts generated around certain statues necessitate a more dynamic reading of this phenomenon, which mobilized strong political and confessional dissent. The examples of demonstrations mounted by Catholics and royalists around statues to Joan of Arc, and by socialists and freethinkers around the monument to Etienne Dolet, who had been burned at the stake in 1546, highlight the ways in which opponents of the regime could use the past, and its symbolic presence on the city street, to assert their factional interests. These episodes also underline the extent to which public monuments' meanings could change under the pressure of unfolding political events. /// Les historiens ont tendance à voir dans la prolifération de monuments aux "grands hommes" qui a marqué les années entre 1880 et 1914 le symbole du triomphe d'une idéologic d'humanisme libéral au cœur de la démocratic républicaine.
