Abstract = {This book explores the political economy of China-Pakistan
economic corridor, a major pilot project for China’s
“One Belt, One Road” initiatives. Pakistan will provide
China with not only a pathway access to the Indian Ocean,
Middle East and Africa, but also vital connections to the
Trans-Asia railway network that links Southeast Asia, South
Asia and West Asia. This book analyzes how domestic factors
in Pakistan will affect China’s $46 billion investments.
It will be of interest to scholars, policymakers, and
             journalists.},

Abstract = {The existing literature on the impact of the state on the
associational order has emphasized the state's concern on
the implications of the associational order to the public
goods and the role of the associational order as a policy
tool of the state. However, few studies have investigated
what particular characters of the state shape the pattern of
the associational order. Through a historical analysis, this
study highlights three important factors related to the
state that contributed to the the rise of the associational
order in Japan during the Great Depression and World War II.
First, the shift of the state preference from protecting the
liberties of private enterprises toward maintaining
political stability in economic crisis and controlling
resource allocation in war was the ultimate driving force
behind the rise of associational order. Second, the
constitutional order of the Japanese state, which involves
not only the organization, composition, powers, and
limitation of the state's executive, legislative, and
jurisdictional branches, but also the people's liberties
defined by the constitution, was strongly influenced by the
continental legal tradition. This structurally shaped the
Japanese pattern of the associational order. Third, the
institutionalized legal and economic beliefs of property
rights provided ideological support to the rise of the
             associational order.},

Abstract = {The convergence argument in the debate on globalization
regards globalization as a structural change. Globalization,
however, is as much a structural change as a social
construction - an imagined order of the future that involves
value judgment and an ideological stand. Through an analysis
of the ideological conflicts in the politics of Japan's
national response to the challenge of globalization, the
article shows that the convergence argument is being
challenged on four specific issues in Japan: the universal
model of market economy conflicts with the search for
national identity; the big bang strategy that asserts a
radical turnover of the national economic system is discrec
ited by the holistic view of the economy that emphasizes the
social embeddedness of the economic system; the new
interpretation of the Japanese economic system as a product
of wartime control contradicts the widely held image of
postwar Japan as a democratic country; and the efficiency
principle for future economic governance is challenged by
the established norms concerning equality. This study
indicates that the convergence argument in the debate on
globalization faces strong resistance from the deeply
institutionalized beliefs in the national economic
             system.},

Abstract = {Economic nationalism reflected in Japanese industrial policy
experienced two distinctive stages during 1950-69. It was
fragmented in the 1950s as political actors held competing
perceptions of national interest and consequently asserted
contesting strategies for industrial policy. The tensions
between the conservative and the progressive eventually led
to a clash in 1960 on the issue of the renewal of the
Japan-US security treaty. Economic nationalism began to
unify the country in the 1960s as political actors were able
to build a consensus on national interest based on economic
growth and united around a grand strategy of high growth and
liberalisation of trade. During this transition, the
perceived external threat to the nation was a major force in
generating the momentum for economic nationalism in
policy-making, while a fair distribution of economic welfare
among social classes through industrial policy was
indispensable for economic nationalism to obtain public
             support.},

Abstract = {The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) is the pilot
project of China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). It is
China’s first government-to-government project with an aim
to comprehensively promote the economic development of
another country along the Silk Road. This chapter discusses
five issues surrounding CPEC that are of great importance to
understand the political economy of the BRI. The analyses on
the challenges confronted by CPEC in its implementation
provide two valuable lessons for future BRI projects. First,
BRI projects must be concerned about not only economic
growth but also fair distribution and socioeconomic justice.
Second, China should not give up its political
responsibility in case a host country’s domestic systems
and mechanisms cannot realize the goals of fair distribution
of economic benefits for BRI projects among different social
             groups.},
