Europe has never been a continent bounded by the seas that surround it. In premodern times, migrants imprinted the languages, arts, and literatures of the places where they settled. They contributed to these cultures and economies. Some were on the move in search of a better life; others were displaced by war, dispossessed, expelled; while still others were brought in servitude to European cities to work, enslaved. Today’s immigration flows in Europe are not exceptional but anchored in this longue durée process. Iberia/Maghreb, Sicily/Lampedusa, Calais are the three hotspots considered in this volume. These regions have been shaped and continue to be shaped by migrants; by their cultures; their Spanish, Arabic, Italian, and Somali; their French, English and Mandarin languages. They are also shaped by migrants’ struggles. The scholars and artists who wrote Migrants shaping Europe, past and present compose a new significant chapter in the cultural history of European migration by reflecting on the forces that have put people into motion since the premodern period and by examining the visual arts, literature, and multilingual social worlds fostered by migration. This historically expansive and multilingual approach to mobility and expressiveness makes a crucial contribution: migrants as a lifeblood of European cultures.}, Key = {fds367688} } @book{fds288393, Author = {Solterer, H}, Title = {The master and Minerva: Disputing women in French medieval culture}, Pages = {1-301}, Publisher = {University of California Press}, Year = {2023}, Month = {September}, ISBN = {9780520088351}, Abstract = {Can words do damage? For medieval culture, the answer was unambiguously yes. And as Helen Solterer contends, in French medieval culture the representation of women exemplified the use of injurious language. Solterer investigates the debates over women between masters and their disciples. Across a broad range of Old French literature to the early modern Querelle des femmes, she shows how the figure of the female respondent became an instrument for disputing the dominant models of representing women. The female respondent exploited the criterion of injurious language that so preoccupied medieval masters, and she charged master poets ethically and legally with libel. Solterer's work thus illuminates an early, decisive chapter in the history of defamation.}, Key = {fds288393} } @book{fds288392, Author = {Solterer, H}, Title = {Timely Fictions}, Year = {2017}, Key = {fds288392} } @book{fds288385, Author = {Solterer, H}, Title = {Un Moyen Âge républicain : paradoxes du théâtre en temps de guerre}, Publisher = {Presses universitaires Paris-Sorbonne,}, Year = {2014}, url = {http://pups.paris-sorbonne.fr/catalogue/arts-et-esthetique/theatrum-mundi/un-moyen-age-republicain}, Key = {fds288385} } %% Book in Progress @misc{fds198395, Author = {H. This article explores the dynamics of one of the earliest European scandals over vernacular literature, The Romance of the Rose. It examines the social context of the fifteenth century Parisian court: why Christine de Pizan mounted a critique of a time-honoured romance then and there and how the local humanists, Jean de Montreuil and Gonthier Col, defended it. Their verbal struggle is an exercise in blaming, and it culminates in the accusation of blasphemy: not against the fiction, but against Christine's effort to assess the public merits of a work, in the manner of the censor in republican Rome. The article highlights two different principles in this much-studied affair: defamation and the sovereignty or majesty of fiction.}, Doi = {10.1177/097194589900200106}, Key = {fds288402} }
